Shop around! You, as the consumer have the right to get the best deal you can. When purchasing car insurance make sure to check / get a wuotation from several different car insurers - this will help ensure you are being offered competitive quotes.

Ask for a discount! If you are talking to your prospective car insurance company on the telephone, and they have given you a quotation, make sure you ask if they can do better - very often, just asking for a discount can lead to a better (i.e cheaper) quotation for the same policy.

Maximise your assets! What I mean by this is shopping around on the basis of what you can offer an insurance company as a safer driver. If you are over 50, make sure you get quotations from companies that specialise in insuring over 50 drivers. If you have a long no-claims discount that you have built up over several years of accident-free driving, make sure you seek insurance quotations from companies that reward accident-free drivers. Just focussing in on your own value to insurance companies in this way can motivate you to save money.

Additional Security? If you have fitted ANY kind of addional security, then make sure to tell your insurers when you are seeking a new car insurance quote. Whether it is a Thatcham security alarm, a steering wheel lock, or a wheel-clamp on your drive, you won't get a discount unless you mention it.

Low Mileage Drivers This is another way to save money on your car insurance. If you do a low-mileage, perhaps less thn 10,000 miles per year, be sure to let the insurer know, this can make a significant difference to the price of your car insurance. If you do a very low mileage - less than 5,000 miles per year - consider taking out specialist classic or mileage-based car insurance.
